Star Wars Squadrons launches on October 2 for $39.99 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It will feature VR support, including PSVR, Oculus, Valve Index, and HTC Vive. Squadrons will also be crossplay with PC, PS4, Xbox One, and virtual reality.

The trailer provides a small taste of what fans can expect with impressive cinematics, and it frames the story around the continued conflict between the defeated Empire and the fledgling New Republic post Return of the Jedi. The former wants revenge, while the latter must struggle to snuff out imperial resistance wherever it’s found.

While we know that doesn’t happen thanks to the Disney film series, it’s the perfect excuse for some big setpiece battles featuring all the classic Star Wars fighters and ships, plus some that never appeared in the original trilogy. That includes locations as well, with at least two never-before-seen planets.

The game will feature 5v5 multiplayer battles with the goal of destroying the enemy flagship, and even though multiplayer is a big focus, there’s still a single-player campaign as well. The main story focuses on new characters — customizable pilots serving the Republic and Empire, respectively — but there will be cameos from well-known characters from the series as well.

The EA Play presentation on June 18 will have more information about the game, including actual gameplay, so stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Star Wars Squadrons news as it develops.
