Starbucks offers its beverages in six sizes such as:

DemiShortTallGrandeVentiTrentaIt is to be noted that Demi and Trenta are not available all over the world, but are more popular in the United States of America.

The most popular sizes are tall, grande, and venti.

The difference between each size:

The difference in each size is the amount of beverage that can fit in a particular size. Demi fits 3 oz, which is approximately 88 ml. Short fits 8 oz, which is approximately 236 ml. Tall fits 12 oz, which is approximately 355 ml. Grande fits 16 oz, which is approximately 473 ml. Venti for hot drinks fits 20 oz, which is approximately 590 ml. Venti for cold drinks fits 24 oz, which is approximately 709 ml. Trenta fits 30 oz, which is approximately 887 ml.

The reason why the cup sizes aren’t conventional:

Starbucks doesn’t have regular cup sizes like small, medium, and large, it has unique names like demi, short, tall, grande, venti, and trenta.  The origin story is based in 1906 when the first-ever pitch was being conducted to franchise Starbucks. The word ‘Demi’ is taken after the French word ‘demitasse’, which means half a cup. Short is the smallest cup available only for hot drinks and espressos. Tall is the third smallest cup size in Starbucks and is used for both, hot and cold drinks. Grande is the normal ‘medium’, but ironically means large in Spanish. Venti offers 20 ounces of drink and is named that since ‘venti’ means 20 in Italian. Trenta offers 30 ounces of drink and ‘Trenta’ means 30 in Italian, it is the largest size Starbucks offers and is available for cold drinks only.

The number of espresso shots in each size:

Demi is used for espresso shots only, and depending on the customer’s preference, you can get 1 or 2 espresso shots in demi. Short has one shot of espresso for the caffeinated drinks. Tall has one shot of espresso as well, but it has two shots of espresso for an Americano. Grande has two shots of espresso, but it has an extra shot, which is three shots for an Americano. Venti for hot drinks has two shots of espresso, but an Americano has 4 shots. Venti for cold drinks has three shots of espresso. All these have exceptions, where the drinks have either more or fewer shots of espresso.
