About Kinokuniya 

Kinokuniya means “Bookstore of Kii Province”.  It refers to a Japanese bookstore founded on 22 January 1927 in Tokyo, Japan.  

This bookstore was founded by a Japanese essayist and former President known as Moichi Tanabe.

Kinokuniya had an oustanding start. It was initially a charcoal and lumber business located in Yotsuya. Thereafter, the bookstore moved to a new location in Shinjuku in 1923 due to the Great Kanto earthquake.

 Kinokuniya had only five employees when it started operating, but over the years the company grow dramatically.  It became one of the largest bookstores in Japan and it also expanded on a global scale.

The headquarters is in Tokyo, Japan. Thereafter,  the first store that was opened overseas, was located in San Francisco, the United States in 1969. Today, Kinokuniya has more than 100 stores worldwide including in many Asian countries, Dubai as well as in the United States. 

 The Kinokuniya building in Shinjuku was fully established in 1964 and it later became a historical building in 2017.

Kinokuniya also has seven regional online stores, which makes the bookstore accessible to all book lovers!
