The game - dubbed Super Mario Run - is a full-sized Super Mario Bros. platformer being developed for mobile devices, and is expected to release December of 2016. According to Miyamoto, the game will put Mario through an entirely new multi-level game that will function much like traditional Mario platformers. In this game, Mario will run forward on his own, but will require players to touch the screen to jump over obstacles and enemies. In essence, it’s much like the Auto-Run stages from New Super Mario Bros. 2.

During the event, Miyamoto explained the design in the following quote:

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple also had this to say about the new Nintendo app coming to iOS:

There will be two main modes in Super Mario Run. The first has players collecting coins and heading toward the goal. The second will be a competitive mode in which players compete against the ghosts of other players who have completed the same course. There is also a third additional mode that will let players create their own Mushroom Kingdom maps based on play results.

Anyone who owns an Apple iOS device will be able to download a single portion of Super Mario Run for free, while the full game will be released for a set purchase price. Few other details have been released as of yet, but Miyamoto did state that there will be more details revealed closer to the release.

Also announced alongside Super Mario Run was a free Mario-themed sticker pack in the App Store for iMessage coming later this month. Pokemon GO also received a bit of attention with the game being Apple Watch friendly in a future update.

Super Mario Run looks to be yet another step forward for the Japan-based company in terms of mobile games. While there hasn’t been much information on the previously announced Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem games, a promised due date of March 2017 is sure to keep fans occupied until more info on the Nintendo NX is announced.
