Synaptics today announced that it has started mass production of its optical in-display fingerprint sensor in association with ” a top five OEM” to bring its optical in-display fingerprint sensors. The company mentions in its press release that this fingerprint sensor is designed for use in smartphones with infinity displays.
The fingerprint scanner can work through full cover glass and only activates itself when needed. It can also work with wet, dry and cold fingers. The press release also boasts of in-display fingerprint scanner being twice as fast as 3D facial recognition. Synaptics has taken quite a few potshots at face unlocking mechanisms in its press releases but that is unlikely to stop OEMs from providing face unlock as a secondary form of biometric authentication. Major OEMs like Apple and Samsung tried to incorporate in-display fingerprint sensors on their flagship devices in 2017 but could not get the technology ready in time. So far, Vivo is the only OEM to have demoed a smartphone with in-display fingerprint scanner but even that was in association with Qualcomm.
