The company called it the “GO Battle League” and said it’s designed to build on existing battle mechanics and will use a matching system to set players up with other opponents around the globe. That means you’re no longer limited to just one location and just people on friends your lists, either.

Presumably, the “existing mechanics” part refers to the tier system and CP cut-off levels that already define PvP in Pokemon GO. However, the announcement had one interesting point Niantic didn’t elaborate on:

What sort of walking requirements will gate entry into the global Battle League remain to be seen.
